Excellus: CNY stroke care cost $36 million over three-year period

 

The average annual hospital costs for stroke care totaled more than $135 million in upstate New York from 2006 to 2008.
Annual hospital costs for stroke care in Central New York averaged $36 million during the same time period. The findings are part of a new report Excellus BlueCross BlueShield released today. Rochester-based Excellus is Central New York's largest health insurer.

Pizzeria owner charged with fraud

 

A Johnson City pizzeria owner is accused of workers' compensation fraud for employing three people off the books, according to the New York State Insurance Department.

Johnson City Police arrested Claudio Carpentieri, 50, and charged him with workers' compensation fraud and offering a false instrument for filing. He is accused of knowingly submitting false documentation to the state Workers' Compensation Board stating that he had no employees so he could avoid paying workers' compensation insurance, investigators said.


Excellus files for 2011 rate increases

 

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has filed for rate changes on its community-rated health-insurance plans in the Central New York region.

The changes, most of them increases, would take effect on Jan. 1 if approved. Rochester-based Excellus is Central New York's largest health insurer.


New program aims to help those with pre-existing conditions

 

Gov. David Paterson today announced a new program meant to provide health insurance for people denied coverage because of an existing illness.

The program, dubbed the "NY Bridge Plan," is a result of the new federal health-care reform law.


Paterson signs law to 'enhance' health-insurance protections

 

Gov. David Paterson on Thursday signed a bill meant to "enhance" consumer protections in case a health insurer or health-maintenance organization discontinues a class of policies or contracts.

The legislation, known as "Ian's Law" amends the New York State Insurance Law to require insurers to certify several pieces of information to Superintendant of Insurance James Wrynn.
