State approves housing grants

 

New York's major housing agencies and the Division of Housing and Community Renewal held their first joint board meeting Thursday and approved a grant for a Lewis County project.

Snow Belt Housing Co., Inc. received a $300,000 grant to finance home improvements at 32 homes in Lewis County. Snow Belt is a housing nonprofit based in Lowville.


State law authorizes prior review for rate hikes

 

The New York State Insurance Department again has the authority to review and approve health-insurance premium increases before they take effect.
Gov. David Paterson signed the bill allowing the reinstatement of the power today.

Since 2000, New York had regulated health-insurance premiums under a "file and use" law that "significantly" limited the state's ability to disapprove premium increases and allowed the insurance industry to regulate itself, the governor's office said in a news release.


Pyrotek closes on Monarch building

 

Pyrotek, Inc. has closed on its purchase of the 140,000-square-foot Monarch Machine Tool facility in Cortlandville.

The $3.3 million deal includes the purchase of the building and some associated costs for moving and renovation. Pyrotek will bring about 50 jobs to the facility and as many as 70 more over the next year to three years, according to the Cortland County Business Development Corporation-Industrial Development Agency (BDC-IDA).


Franziska Racker Centers continues growth

ITHACA — The Franziska Racker Centers, Inc. (Racker Centers), an Ithaca–area nonprofit that provides clinical, educational, and residential treatment for people with developmental disabilities, experienced steady growth over the past 10 years, boosting annual revenue by $13 million.


Housing group announces Utica project

 

Housing Visions, the city of Utica, and the New York State Division of Housing & Community Renewal today announced a new housing project with 37 units for low- and moderate-income families.

Housing Visions, a Syracuse-based housing nonprofit, acquired 10 properties within the 1200 and 1400 blocks of Kemble Street, 100 block of Hobart Street., and 700 block of Noyes Street for the homes. Housing Visions will rehabilitate four buildings, demolish three buildings, and construct four new buildings.
