State offering artist-as-entrepreneur program at Earlville Opera House

EARLVILLE, N.Y. — Earlville Opera House (EOH) and Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, Inc. will hold an artist-as-entrepreneur program beginning in April.

Artists living and working in Broome, Chenango, Otsego, and other counties in the Central and Southern Tier regions can apply to participate in this free entrepreneurial program, EOH said.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is accepting applications for the program. It’s working with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) on the initiative.

The NYSCA/NYFA artist-as-entrepreneur program is described as an “intensive,” multi-day professional development program offered online that delves into the “fundamental principles of sustainability in the arts.” The program benefits artists “of all disciplines and stages of their career” who are looking to identify new ways of thinking and approaching their arts practice, “while seeking a community of like-minded artists.”

NYFA is now accepting applications for the April program. It’s available at no charge, presented by NYFA in partnership with the NYSCA’s state & local partnerships program; Earlville Opera House; and Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, Inc. It’s part of a series of ongoing professional-development programs for the arts communities in New York.

Featured topics will include strategic planning, finance, law, marketing, and fundraising, with additional material drawn from NYFA’s textbook, “The Profitable Artist.” The program includes workshops, discussions, and breakout groups. Participants will work through a “flexible and dynamic action plan,” and other entrepreneurial tools that provide “a blueprint for their practice or specific projects.”

Organizers will customize content “in light of the current challenges artists are facing,” and will present the material “with this perspective in mind.”

Artists interested in attending are required to apply, and participants are selected through a panel review process. Artists of all disciplines (visual, multidisciplinary, performing, literary, interdisciplinary, social practice, folk and traditional, film, video, and new media) and career stages, including students, are encouraged to apply.

Attendance is mandatory to all sessions, which will be held online. Those interested are asked to check their calendar before applying.

The Earlville Opera House is located at 18 East Main St. in the village of Earlville in northern Chenango County. It remains closed for on-site programming “until further notice,” as the pandemic continues.
