SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Three more Onondaga County residents have died from a COVID-19 infection, bringing the county’s death toll from the disease to 40.

That’s according to Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon who on Tuesday announced the deaths to open his daily coronavirus briefing at the Oncenter.

“We’ve seen what this virus is doing to our communities who are vulnerable and we’ve lost more neighbors,” McMahon said to open his remarks. “We have had three neighbors leave us over the last 24 hours.”

The deceased are all males: a Caucasian in his 90s, an African-American in his 80s, and an African-American in his 60s.

Of the 40 people who have died from COVID-19, 29 are Caucasian, seven are African-American, and four are of another race, according to McMahon. The deceased include 22 females and 18 males.

“I want to take this opportunity to think about their families, grieve with them, and certainly our prayers go out to not just those who we’ve lost related to COVID-19 but everybody in our community that we’ve lost during this process,” said McMahon.

Onondaga County now has 1,115 COVID-19 cases, up by 27 from 1,088 on Monday. The number of active cases increased by 20 to 452.

The county has 47 people with the illness in the hospital, down from 51 on Monday. Of those hospitalized, 13 are in critical condition, up by two from a day earlier.

McMahon also reported that 623 people have recovered from the deadly bug, up by four from the day before.
