SYRACUSE, N.Y. — GYN Oncology of Central New York has joined Upstate Medical University’s department of obstetrics and gynecology, becoming part of the services offered through the Upstate Cancer Center.

The practice includes Drs. Mary Cunningham and W. Douglas Bunn. They joined Upstate Medical on Monday.

Cunningham has also accepted the position of director of the division of gynecologic oncology, Upstate Medical said in a news release. With the move, Cunningham and Bunn join Dr. Rinki Agarwal as physicians in Upstate Medical’s division of gynecologic oncology.

“Affiliating with Upstate allows us to broaden our services to better serve the women of Central New York. We are delighted to be building an expanded Gynecologic Oncology program with the Cancer Center,” Cunningham said. “While patients will not see any immediate change in their care, our relationship with Upstate will provide patients with the opportunity to participate in expanded clinical trials and more seamless referral to additional support services.”

The medical school describes the practice as the area’s “leading provider of comprehensive care for women with gynecologic cancers.”

Bunn and Cunningham will continue to see patients at their current location at the Madison Irving Medical Center at 475 Irving Ave. in Syracuse.

The affiliation with Upstate is “ideal,” Dr. Robert Silverman, Upstate Medical’s chair of obstetrics and gynecology, said in the release. “The move broadens the treatment opportunities for patients and underscores the importance of our work in this area,” he said.

GYN Oncology of CNY and Upstate’s division of gynecologic oncology offer diagnostic and therapeutic options for women with ovarian, uterine, cervical and other gynecologic cancers. The services include radical surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and newer treatment modalities such as immunotherapy and robotic sentinel node dissection. Nutritional and psychological counseling and genetic testing are also available.

Upstate Medical also participates in the National Cancer Institute’s cooperative trial group, NRG Oncology, providing patients with local access to the latest developments in therapy and access to national clinical trials.
