Syracuse football adds 6,800 new season ticket holders

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse Orange football fans have purchased 6,800 new season tickets for the upcoming gridiron season, Syracuse University Director of Athletics John Wildhack announced Friday.

Wildhack also noted that the renewal rate of current football season-ticket holders is over 90 percent, which he called “outstanding.”

In addition, Friday is the deadline to renew season tickets for men’s and women’s basketball. “We’ve seen strong renewals for both,” he added during a news conference in the school’s Iocolano-Petty Football Wing auditorium.

Upcoming ACC Network

Wildhack also discussed the status of the ACC Network and its availability. He reminded Syracuse fans that the ACC Network launches Aug. 22. It’s an ESPN network that will be dedicated to coverage of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

So far, Wildhack noted, the network has distribution agreements in place with DirecTV, Google Fiber, Hulu, Optimum, PlayStation Vue, and Verizon Fios.

What about Spectrum?

“They’re in negotiations with ESPN, and that’s where I would expect to be at this point,” said Wildhack. “I’m confident and I think they feel confident that there’s a path to getting a deal done with Charter-Spectrum. It has more subscribers in the ACC footprint than any other provider because it goes through [North Carolina] as well and into South Carolina. These negotiations normally go down literally to the 23rd hour … and that might be the way that this plays out.”

Wildhack also reminded fans that the men’s basketball season opener vs. Virginia on Nov. 6 will be available only on the ACC Network. He also noted that coverage of ACC sports on the network won’t be limited to football and basketball.

“One of the great attributes of the ACC Network will be a dramatic increase in the coverage of women’s sports and Olympic sports. As an example, there’ll be 30 women’s soccer games, 20 volleyball matches, and 12 field hockey games on the ACC Network exclusively this year,” said Wildhack.

That’s a 90 percent increase over what the ESPN networks dedicated to those three sports last year, he added.
