Syracuse football, Western Michigan agree to play two more times

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse University and Western Michigan jointly announced Wednesday that they have agreed to continue their football series with two additional games scheduled for 2020 and 2023, respectively.

The Orange will visit Western Michigan on Sept. 26, 2020. The Broncos will return the favor by traveling to Syracuse on Sept. 9, 2023.

Syracuse is set to host Western Michigan on Sept. 21 of the upcoming 2019 season in the second game of a two-game, home-and-home series announced a couple years ago. The Orange won the first-ever matchup between the teams, defeating the Broncos 55-42 at in Kalamazoo, Michigan in the 2018 season opener.

“Western Michigan is a quality program, who gave us a very competitive game last season. We are excited to continue the series,” Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack said in a news release.

Western Michigan is coached by former Syracuse assistant coach Tim Lester. In two seasons under Lester, the Broncos have posted a 13-12 record. Western Michigan went 7-6 in 2018, culminating in an appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. BYU. The Cougars beat the Broncos 49-18.

With the addition of Western Michigan to the schedule, Syracuse’s four non-conference opponents for 2020 are now set. The other three games are scheduled against Rutgers, Colgate, and Liberty.
