GEDDES, N.Y. — The record attendance at this year’s New York State Fair helped push it into an industry publication’s top-10 ranking of fairs in North America.

The New York State Fair’s 2018 attendance of more than 1.2 million advanced it to 9th place in the attendance category among Carnival Warehouse’s top 50 fairs. The group includes state fairs, county fairs, and large livestock shows and rodeos in the U.S. and Canada.

It represents the first time that the annual summer event in the town of Geddes has placed in the top 10 in the Carnival Warehouse rankings, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets said in a Wednesday news release.

The No. 9 ranking is up from each of the last two years, when the New York State Fair placed 13th, per the news release.

The New York State Fair ranked third among all state fairs for the second straight year. The State Fair is third behind only Texas and Minnesota for total attendance among state fairs. As recently as 2013, the State Fair ranked 11th among all state fairs and 23rd among all fairs on the Carnival Warehouse list.

“We’re proud of the growth that has happened here, between Gov. Cuomo’s investments in our facilities and our non-stop efforts to keep our programming exciting and new. We’re building something special here and we’re making the Great New York State Fair greater year after year,” Troy Waffner, director of the New York State Fair, said in the release.
