The number of people applying for new unemployment-insurance benefits in New York state in the week ending Jan. 25 fell by 7,083, or 25 percent, to 21,501.
Fewer layoffs in the state’s construction, food services, and retail trade industries, led the decline, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued today.
It’s the third straight week that New York’s first-time unemployment claims have declined significantly, since 52,096 claims were filed in the week ending Jan. 4.
