Former U.S. Surgeon General headlined the Healthy Syracuse conference

Former U.S. Surgeon General, Regina M. Benjamin, M.D.

ONONDAGA — A crowd of about 300 people gathered today for the second Healthy Syracuse Worksite Wellness Conference held at the SRC Arena and Events Center on the campus of Onondaga Community College.

The event encourages and supports local employers in adopting wellness policies and programs that promote the health of employees while managing health-care costs and increasing productivity, organizers say.

Rob Simpson, president of CenterState CEO, provided the opening remarks and introduced this year’s keynote speaker — former U.S. Surgeon General, Regina M. Benjamin, M.D.

Benjamin’s main message to attendees revolved around prevention and making lifestyle changes for a healthier nation.

“Prevention is the greatest opportunity to improve America’s health,” Benjamin said.

Following Benjamin’s speech, conference attendees split off into the first round of break-out sessions that covered topics ranging from how a company’s wellness program complies with Affordable Care Act to stress management in the workplace.
