Cayuga Community College names new president

AUBURN, N.Y. — The board of trustees of Cayuga Community College has announced Brian Durant as the ninth president in school history.

Durant will begin his presidency in late August, Cayuga Community College said in a news release distributed on Tuesday.

Durant takes over for Gregory DeCinque, who has served as the school’s interim president since December 2013, the school said.

Durant most recently served as vice president (VP) for academic and student affairs at SUNY Adirondack.  He earlier served as dean for student affairs at the same school before his promotion to the VP role, according to the Cayuga Community College news release.

“Brian is young and energetic and will fit right in at Cayuga.  There are big shoes to fill when Dr. DeCinque leaves, but after meeting Brian, we all felt that he was ready to address the needs of our college,” Jeffrey Edwards, chairman of the school’s board of trustees, said in its news release.  “The board looks forward to the transition and is eager to go to work on Cayuga’s future with Brian Durant at the lead.”

Durant will complete his doctorate in higher-education administration from Northeastern University in August, the school said.

He earned a master’s degree in education from The College of Saint Rose in Albany and a bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Plattsburgh, according to the news release.

The incoming president is “honored” to serve in this leadership role, Durant said in the news release.

“With campuses in Auburn and Fulton along with the comprehensive offerings available for students online, Cayuga Community College has a tremendous reputation for providing access to higher education.  I look forward to collaboratively working with the college’s board of trustees, faculty and staff, and the regional community to provide high quality education for students as well as strengthen the position of Cayuga Community College for the future,” said Durant.

Founded in 1953, Cayuga Community College is part of the State University of New York (SUNY).

The school operates campuses at 197 Franklin St. in Auburn and at 11 River Glen Dr. in Fulton, according to the school’s website.
