SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y. — Welch Allyn, Inc. announced it has recently partnered with the Ohio State University College of Nursing to study the physical-examination process in health care and how it may be changing in the near future.
Both organizations will use a structured approach to deeply understand the workflow, challenges, and needs for performing a standard physical examination and the actions resulting from that exam — including patient treatments and health-care provider referrals, the Skaneateles Falls–based manufacturer of medical-diagnostic equipment said in a news release.
“As health care continues to undergo rapid transformations we must be ready to provide clinicians with the right equipment to help meet further challenges. Our partnership … will allow us to learn first-hand the challenges physicians, nurses and patients face in this changing industry. … Basically products will be modeled by clinicians for clinicians,” Sal Strods, senior director of advanced technology and sensors at Welch Allyn, said in the release.

The research project is being conducted on the Ohio State campus, where Welch Allyn professionals will facilitate sessions with health-care providers and experts to obtain feedback on the physical-assessment process and new design concepts. The College of Nursing will provide Welch Allyn with research expertise and literature reviews on topics relevant to the study. The two partners will then work together to develop concepts steaming from hands-on learning to help clinicians at the point of care, the release noted.
“Given our shared vision of transforming health care and improving health outcomes, it seemed natural to partner with Welch Allyn in this exciting endeavor,” said Bernadette Melnyk, Ph.D., university chief wellness officer, vice president for health promotion and dean of the College of Nursing at Ohio State.
No financial terms of the partnership were disclosed in the release.
Privately held Welch Allyn employs more than 2,600 people in 26 different countries.
It has 1,300 employees in Central New York and estimated annual revenue of $700 million, according to CNYBJ Research.
