SYRACUSE — Hiscock & Barclay, LLP announced Monday that it has hired former New York State Supreme Court Justice John C. Cherundolo for its Torts & Products Liability Practice.
Cherundolo, who was a nationally recognized trial lawyer before joining the state Supreme Court, will also serve as senior trial counsel to other law practices at Syracuse–based Hiscock. That includes intellectual-property litigation, environmental litigation, and general commercial litigation.
Cherundolo served for the past six years as an acting justice of the Onondaga County Supreme Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. He wrote many decisions of significance to New York state, according to Hiscock.

Before joining the bench, Cherundolo gained prominence as a trial lawyer by winning large and complex cases throughout the U.S., the firm says. In 1983, he founded Cherundolo, Bottar & Leone, P.C., practicing litigation in the areas of medical malpractice, product liability, workplace accidents, automobile, and aviation cases.
As lead trial counsel, Cherundolo has won many of the largest verdicts in upstate New York, and has been involved in complex cases throughout the Northeast, according to Hiscock. At the firm, Cherundolo will continue his practice — handling a variety of tort-based litigation cases, as well as supporting other litigation practices at Hiscock. He is admitted to practice in New York state and in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.
“I am excited to return to private practice and offer my trial experience to the team of great lawyers at Hiscock & Barclay,” Cherundulo said in a news release.
Cherundolo is a fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and currently serves as the state co-chair. He is also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a fellow of the American Board of Trial Advocates, including serving as the Central New York Chapter’s representative to the board of directors. He is also a founding member of the New York State Academy of Trial Lawyers.
Cherundolo has been an adjunct professor at the Syracuse University (SU) College of Law for the past decade, where he teaches courses in advanced torts and civil actions: procedures and pre-trial discovery. Cherundolo is currently chair of the SU athletic department board of directors, and is a member of the board of the Syracuse football alumni club.
He graduated from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1973 after previously earnings his master’s degree in public administration from SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and his bachelor’s degree from SU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
Hiscock & Barclay has about 200 attorneys total. In addition to its Syracuse headquarters, the law firm also has offices in Albany, Buffalo, New York City, Rochester, Boston, Toronto, and Washington, D.C.
