Area colleges form vets’ consortium

SYRACUSE — Colleges and universities throughout a 13-county region around Syracuse are joining together to support military personnel during their reintegration to civilian life in the area.

The Central New York Veterans’ Higher Education Regional Consortium includes 26 institutions of higher education. The partners seek to support active duty, reserve, and National Guard members, veterans, and their family members, according to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (SU), one of the partners.

“Central New York is a region on the economic rebound,” Peg Stearns, director of SU’s veterans’ resource center, said in a news release. “Those of us in higher education realize the region’s robust higher education options and quality of life provide opportunities for a successful future to veterans and their families. Consortium members’ collegiality is focused on the best services for the veteran, regardless of the specific institution or agency involved.”

Increasing numbers of veterans enrolling in colleges and universities and the need for services specifically targeted at them sparked formation of the consortium, according to SU. Sarah Yaw, an assistant professor at Cayuga Community College, founded the consortium.
