New York’s unemployment claims edge up in latest week

The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state rose nearly 4 percent to 18,279 in the week ending June 7, from 17,649 the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor reported today.

Despite the increase, the Empire State’s first-time jobless claims remained below the 20,000 mark for a sixth straight week since peaking above 40,000 in late April. That’s indicative of a state labor market in which layoffs have leveled off, at least for now.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits in New York also rose slightly in the week ending June 7 to 174,252 from 173,038 in the prior week.
