Bassett names new chief of neurosurgery

COOPERSTOWN — Mark J. Hornyak, M.D., a board certified neurosurgeon, has joined Bassett Healthcare Network as chief of neurosurgery at Bassett Medical Center.

He most recently worked in the Detroit area, where he was chief of neurosurgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital, an assistant professor at Wayne State University, and cared for patients at the Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Hospital, according to a Bassett news release.

Dr. Hornyak earned his undergraduate degree at Loyola College and his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, both in Baltimore. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at New York Medical College, in Valhalla, N.Y., and a fellowship in skull base surgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Dr. Hornyak is a general neurosurgeon, surgically treating the breadth of neurological disorders of the brain, spine, and peripheral nerves. He specializes in treating intracranial tumors and other lesions in and around the brain. He is an active member of several medical societies and has been published in a variety of neurosurgical journals, according to the release.

Dr. Hornyak sees patients in Cooperstown at the Surgical Outpatient Clinic, at Oneonta Surgical Specialties, and at Herkimer Health Center.
