First endowed professor at SUNY Oswego to focus on finance

OSWEGO — The first endowed faculty member at the State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego brings 30 years of experience on Wall Street to campus and will teach classes in corporate finance.

Mary Rodgers, a former analyst for Merrill Lynch and researcher on financial panics, is the first Marcia Belmar Willock Professor of Finance. In addition to classes on corporate finance, she’ll also offer an independent study course on bond markets where students can become fantasy fund managers by picking assets and following how they perform, according to the university.

“I’m trying to enrich the student experience, showing how accounting, marketing, and management majors work together to tell the complete story in financial terms of a given company,” Rodgers said in a news release.

She also wants to promote student marketability by embedding the Chartered Financial Analyst curriculum in the school’s finance program. Her position is named in honor of a 1950 SUNY Oswego graduate who the school said made millions as a self-educated investor.

Willock donated $1 million to establish the professorship.
