SYRACUSE — A Syracuse company has launched demonstration projects at area dairy farms to prove its technology can lower the cost of generating electricity using animal waste.
American Biogas Conditioning’s technology is used in anaerobic digestion. The process uses bacteria to break down waste into a gas made mainly of methane, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), which has provided $470,000 in funding for the company’s work.
The gas is then burned to produce power. American Biogas makes equipment to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas. The substance would otherwise corrode engine gaskets and seals, according to NYSERDA.

The firm has plans to expand to up to 35 people in the next five years, according to NYSERDA.
The company is testing its technology at Twin Birch farm in Skaneateles, Roach Farm in Venice Center, and at the Cayuga Regional Digester Facility in Auburn.
