Federal grants to fund Syracuse, Ithaca airport improvements

The U.S. Department of Transportation is making grants to Syracuse Hancock International Airport and Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport to combat winter weather.

The Syracuse airport will receive $3.9 million in funding to upgrade three deicing pads and a snow-melt pad. The pads, first built in 1996, are set to be renovated to maintain their structural integrity, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

“This is a very important project for our airport,” Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner said in the release. “With over six months of deicing taking place during the average winter season, it is critical that we keep our facilities in top condition.”

Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport is in line for a $475,000 federal award. The Department of Transportation earmarked that funding to replace an existing snowplow.

“This is a smart investment for Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport,” Gillibrand said. “When we upgrade snow-removal equipment, we can clear runways faster and keep travelers moving safely, even in adverse weather.”
