USDA provides loan, awards grant funding to Volney for water-main project

VOLNEY, N.Y. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded the town of Volney in Oswego County a grant and a loan to build new water mains in the community.

USDA Rural Development has awarded the town a grant of more than $500,000 and provided it a loan worth more than $1.4 million to help fund the project.

U.S. Representative Daniel Maffei (D–DeWitt) and U.S. Senators Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) made the announcement in a news release Maffei’s office distributed on Friday.

“This infrastructure funding provides our area the resources to construct new water mains and bring clean water to our residents,” Dennis Lockwood, Volney town supervisor, said in the news release.

With this funding and low-interest loan, the town of Volney will be able to make “crucial” improvements to its water district without passing the entire financial burden to local taxpayers, Schumer said in the news release.

Rural Development grant funding through the USDA is focused on providing resources for economic development, the lawmakers said.

The agency provides grants and loans to make needed infrastructure investments in rural communities across the nation, they added.
