DeWitt–based Galson Laboratories is sold to a Swiss company

DeWITT, N.Y. — Galson Laboratories, Inc., a DeWitt–based laboratory that focuses on industrial-hygiene analysis and monitoring, is now under new ownership.

SGS S.A., a Geneva, Switzerland–based inspection, verification, testing, and certification company, recently acquired the local laboratory, Galson announced in a news release. It didn’t release any terms of the acquisition agreement.

Galson Laboratories, now referred to as an SGS Company, will become the SGS Center of Excellence for Industrial Hygiene Lab Services within its global network, the release stated.

SGS, which employs more than 80,000 people globally, operates a network of over 1,650 offices and laboratories around the world, according to Galson.

Galson contends its clients “will benefit” from the acquisition as SGS will work to expand its services globally and expand its analytical capabilities, according to the news release.

Galson Laboratories, which is located at 6601 Kirkville Road, has clients throughout North America that range from consulting firms to end users in various industries.

Galson Laboratories represents “another step” in growing SGS’s “expertise and quality” in the global health and safety arena, according to the news release.

“Our vision has been to be the global leaders in providing data for the protection of workers, and as part of SGS, Galson will have the greatest opportunity to realize our vision,” Joe Unangst, president and CEO of Galson Laboratories, said in the release. “Together we will be able to meet the needs of industrial hygiene, health and safety professionals all over the world.”

The management team and employees are “staying on” at Galson, the DeWitt firm said.

Galson added that it expects the “innovations” and extended client base that SGS has in North America will “increase the rate of growth” and create jobs for the company.

Besides its headquarters in DeWitt, Galson Laboratories operates facilities in Charleston, S.C.; Alameda, Calif.; Dickinson, Texas; Stevens Point, Wisc.; and Mississauga, Ont., according to its news release.

Galson Laboratories said it employs more than 110 people and generated revenue topping $17 million in 2013.

Established in 1878, SGS offered agricultural-inspection services for grain trading in Europe, according to the Galson news release.

The firm was later registered in Geneva as Société Générale de Surveillance in 1919.

SGS first listed its shares on the Swiss Exchange (SWX) in 1985. SGS, which includes 10 business segments, operates across 10 geographical regions.
