UTICA, N.Y. — Planet Fitness, a Newington, N.H.–based franchise of fitness centers, will open a health club in Utica in December.
Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri made the announcement in a news release distributed Tuesday.
The Planet Fitness center, which will open in the Riverside Center in north Utica, will create between 15 and 20 jobs, according to Palmieri’s office.

He also thanked Bob Morris, the franchisee who owns several area locations of Planet Fitness, for “investing and believing” in Utica.
Planet Fitness currently operates other nearby fitness centers at 7 New Hartford Shopping Center in New Hartford; at 1895 Black River Blvd. in Rome; and at 2002 Glenwood Ave in Oneida, according to the Planet Fitness website.
Founded in 1992 in Dover, N.H., Planet Fitness is a health-club franchise that describes itself as the “fastest growing” in the U.S., according to the website.
Planet Fitness has about 800 locations and more than 5 million members, the website says.
