A set of grants worth $3.45 million will help 15 communities throughout New York redevelop brownfield sites.
The grants will come through the Brownfield Opportunity Areas program, which supports programs aimed at redeveloping brownfields. The sites are dormant properties where contamination has impeded development, turning them into economic and environmental drains, according to the state.
The grants support steps like investigations of brownfield sites to determine contamination, environmental impact assessments, economic and market studies, redevelopment plans, and more.

The city of Auburn will receive more than $389,000 for a project focused on developing a market-driven redevelopment strategy for Auburn’s riverfront and downtown area. The 562-acre Owasco River corridor involved in the project includes at least 13 brownfield sites and numerous other vacant properties.
Broome County will use a grant of $305,000 to complete an implementation strategy aimed at a 222-acre site in the village of Johnson and the city of Binghamton. The strategy will focus on specific techniques and actions aimed at ensuring desired investment and redevelopment
The site involved includes 17 brownfield areas.
St. Lawrence County will get $360,000 to support redevelopment of a 200-acre brownfield site in the town of Massena.
