SYRACUSE — Local college students will get the chance to intern for eight Upstate companies this summer in the areas of biomass and bioenergy.
The companies are working with CenterState CEO, the Syracuse Center of Excellence, and the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), to offer the paid internships. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is funding the program, which began last year with two internships.
The program is open to full- and part-time undergraduate or graduate students.

Participating companies include Antares Group, ACT Bioenergy, Mascoma, Mesa Reduction Engineering and Processing, New England Wood Pellet, O’Brien & Gere, ReEnergy, and Sunoco.
Biomass refers to any organic material available on a renewable basis, according to ESF. It can be used as a sustainable resource in producing heat, power, fuel, and other consumer products.
Biomass includes dedicated energy crops, trees and other plants, wood and wood residue, fibers, and waste materials, the college said.
“People see upstate New York as poised to have an important role in the biomass industry,” Timothy Volk, co-director of the ESF-based SUNY Center for Sustainable and Renewable Energy, said in a news release “ESF is certainly engaged in it, with training and educating students to work in the field, and there are a number of local companies that want interns to help them as they move forward.”
