SKANEATELES FALLS — Welch Allyn President and CEO Julie Shimer will retire at the end of 2012.
“After a long and fulfilling career that has lasted more than 30 years and offered the opportunity to work for wonderful companies in a number of different capacities , I am looking forward to retirement and the opportunity to spend more time with family,” Shimer said in a news release.
Shimer took the top job at Welch Allyn, a medical-device manufacturer, in 2007 as the first woman to lead the company in its 95-year history. She had been serving on the board of directors since 2002.
One of the highlights of her tenure was the start of a $30 million expansion at the company’s headquarters in Skaneateles Falls.
Before leading Welch Allyn, Shimer served as president and CEO of Vocera Communications, a wireless communications company based in Cupertino, Calif. She also held executive positions at 3Com Corp., Motorola, and AT&T Bell Laboratories.
Welch Allyn’s board has appointed a search committee and hired an executive search firm to assist in finding Shimer’s successor. The company, based in Skaneateles Falls, employs more than 2,700 people in 26 countries.
