OWEGO, N.Y. — Tioga County is seeking applicants for an accelerated-apprenticeship program in manufacturing.
Tioga County Economic Development and Planning (TEAM Tioga), along with the Tioga County Career Center and the New York State Department of Labor on Wednesday announced the new workforce-development and training-program initiative.
The program offers “guaranteed,” direct hire manufacturing jobs in Tioga and surrounding counties, and six weeks of paid training for selected participants. The starting wage during the program is $13 per hour, and participants aren’t required to have any prior experience, per the release.

“We are very excited to have this opportunity here in Tioga County. The accelerated apprenticeship program is truly a win-win for our employers and our workforce,” Brittany Woodburn, program coordinator, said.
More than 20 apprentices have been hired into careers in advanced manufacturing as part of an accelerated-apprenticeship program in the Syracuse area that was held twice this past year, Tioga County noted.
Organizations involved in coordinating the program include TEAM Tioga, Tioga County Career Center, New York State Department of Labor, Owego Apalachin Central School District, SUNY Broome Community College, Manufacturers Association of Central New York, the U.S. Department of Labor’s American Apprenticeship Initiative, Albany–based Workforce Development Institute, and Working Solutions, according to the release.
Working Solutions has offices in Oneida, Madison, and Herkimer counties, according to its website.
The program
The apprenticeship program will prepare participants for several advanced manufacturing positions, including work as a computer numeric controlled (CNC) machinist, maintenance mechanic, and an industrial-manufacturing technician.
Manufacturers participating in the program include Applied Technology Manufacturing Corporation of Owego, Crowley Fabricating and Machining Co. Inc. of Endicott, Crown Cork and Seal (NYSE: CCK) in Nichols, Granite Works LLC of Waverly, and the Wagner Companies, which has a location in Owego.
The training will take place at the Owego Apalachin Central School District STEAM facility located at 5 Sheldon Guile Boulevard in Owego, in partnership with SUNY Broome, which will provide both the curriculum and instructor for the program.

Applications are due June 16. Training will begin in mid-July and concludes in August. Successful candidates will begin full-time employment at the end of August.
