SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Passenger traffic at Syracuse Hancock International Airport was up more than 18 percent in the month of April, compared to April 2017. The numbers are the “highest the airport has seen in over 10 years,” the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA) said in a recent news release.
The airport’s total traffic for the first four months of 2018 has increased almost 10 percent over the same period in 2017, the SRAA added.
The Syracuse airport expects the gains to continue as it has forged a number of new air-service announcements that will start in the next several months. Allegiant Air (NASDAQ: ALGT) on March 7 announced new nonstop service to the Sanford/Orlando area from Syracuse beginning May 30, and new nonstop service to Nashville from Syracuse, which will begin June 14.

Frontier Airlines on April 4 also announced that it will begin operating out of Hancock starting in July. Frontier will start nonstop service from Syracuse to the Denver and Raleigh-Durham markets in July, with nonstop service to Orlando and Chicago O’Hare set to begin in August.
“Bringing in additional service, more non-stop destinations, and lower fares have been a priority for the airport authority since we began managing the airport just over four years ago,” Christina Callahan, executive director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said in the news release. “To see such record levels of growth, prior to the launch of our new markets, is very exciting and we are confident, a predictor of the future of [the airport].”
As a result of the recent air-service announcements, Syracuse will have a “record” 21 nonstop destinations and seven airlines. Passenger traffic is projected to “increase significantly” once all of the newly announced service begins, the SRAA added.
