Sanmina Corp. updates plans for layoffs in Owego

OWEGO, N.Y. — Manufacturer Sanmina Corp. (NASDAQ: SANM) has altered its plans for laying off workers, according to a filing with New York state.

The California-headquartered company announced in December it was laying off 161 of 274 employees from its plant at 1200 Taylor Road in Owego. It said layoffs would start March 7.

In an amended Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, Sanmina said the number to be laid off was 114 and listed the total number of employees as 203. It also included details of how workers would be let go.

Twenty-three workers are being laid off between March 7 and March 21. Another 28 who were to be laid off during that period will instead be let go in the two weeks after April 26. Sixty-three employees are to be laid off in the two weeks after June 6.

“The remaining 89 employees will be retained through July 2018,” Sanmina said in the updated WARN notice.

Dozens of Sanmina workers have already found employment elsewhere, many with other manufacturers, says Sheri McCall, manager of the Tioga Career Center.

Sanmina announced Dec. 6 that the printed circuit board plant would close, McCall recounts. Knowing other area manufacturers were looking for employees with manufacturing and warehousing experience, the Tioga Career Center put together a “pop-up” job fair specifically for Sanmina’s workers on Dec. 13.

Despite the short lead time, that job fair attracted 32 companies looking to hire, McCall says.

The county had its annual job fair on March 7 and drew 109 employers and 440 job seekers, including many of those preparing to leave Sanmina. While some of the same companies attended the March job fair after attending the December job fair, not all needed to, McCall says. “Some were able to fill all their open positions with Sanmina people.”

Sanmina, a publicly traded company headquartered in San Jose, California, manufacturers electronic parts. It has 45,000 workers on six continents and had revenues of $6.87 billion in 2017, according to the company website.
