Unison Industries gets state grant for nearly $30 million expansion project in Norwich

NORWICH, N.Y. — New York is providing Unison Industries, LLC a grant of up to $4.23 million for a nearly $30 million expansion project at its facility in Norwich.

The company, a supplier of complex gas-turbine engine components and electrical and mechanical systems, is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

The company plans to “upgrade and improve” its product manufacturing and research and development operations. The state offered the grant money to “encourage Unison to spend $28.9 million in its Norwich facility,” the office of Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a news release issued Tuesday.

The grant money is part of the “Southern Tier Soaring” Upstate Revitalization Initiative award that the region won in December 2015 in Cuomo’s Upstate economic-development contest. The grant “is performance-based and tied to project commitments,” Cuomo’s office said.

The project will result in the creation of 76 new jobs over five years, as well as the retention of 362 existing jobs, the office of Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Unison Industries will spend more than $10 million in facility and equipment upgrades and $18 million in research and development operations.

The company expects that crews will finish the expansion project in December of 2021.

“Unison’s Norwich expansion is great news for the community and further proof of the strength of New York’s aviation and aerospace industries,” Cuomo said in the release.

Founded in 1980, Unison is a supplier to engine and airframe programs, providing “advanced performance” products for markets that include commercial aviation, military aviation, space, power generation, oil and gas, and transportation.

The company, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of GE Aviation, employs more than 2,000 people at five major manufacturing locations as well as engineering centers and supporting sites across the globe.

“We are excited about the growth in the Unison Industries facility here in Norwich with the support from New York and Empire State Development. This site has been part of this community for a long time, and this investment will help us continue to drive growth in our manufacturing and research operations into the future,” Dan Ketchum, general manager of the Unison Industries site in Norwich, said in Cuomo’s release.
