HAMILTON, N.Y. — Colgate University announced it has named Tracey Hucks provost and dean of the faculty, effective July 1.
Hucks, a Colgate alumna, is currently a professor at Davidson College in North Carolina. She is a “nationally regarded and prolific scholar” of American religious history and Africana Studies, Colgate said in a news release.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in religious studies and African American studies from Colgate in 1987. Colgate awarded Hucks a master’s degree in religious studies in 1990. She earned a second master’s degree in 1995 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1998 in religious studies, with a scholarly focus on the religions of Africa and the Americas.
Prior to joining the Davidson faculty, Hucks spent more than 15 years at Haverford College, rising from assistant to full professor and ultimately chairing the Department of Religion. She also directed Haverford’s Bi-College Africana Studies Program with Bryn Mawr College in addition to several other responsibilities and accomplishments.
“I am excited to welcome Professor Hucks back to Colgate University,” Colgate President Brian W. Casey said in the release. “Tracey Hucks is an intellectual of the first order and a formidable scholar across a variety of fields.”
Hucks was born in Harlem in New York City.
