UTICA, N.Y. — The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties awarded more than $4.8 million in the third quarter of this year, the organization announced recently.
The funding is a mix of grants to nonprofits, scholarships to students, and support for those affected by the July tornado in Rome.
The Rome, NY Emergency Response Fund, established July 16 after the tornado struck Rome, has raised about $2 million, with $1.5 million from Oneida County and more than $450,000 from individual and corporate donors. The foundation received more than 650 applications for emergency funding, according to a news release from the foundation.

As part of the Community Foundation’s grantmaking process, six nonprofits received more than $72,000 through the Education, Health, and Sciences Grant Round held over the summer. Held three times a year, the grant round supports nonprofit organizations that have outcomes-driven programs or projects with a focus on education, health, and/or sciences.
More than 150 students received scholarships totaling more than $550,000 from 70 scholarship funds, per the release. The scholarships are made possible by donors and are awarded to students from Herkimer and Oneida counties pursuing degrees in various areas of study and at higher education institutions both locally and across the country.
The Community Foundation’s donor-advised funds awarded more than 300 grants totaling more than $1.67 million to nonprofits in the two-county region.
Several new funds were recently created at the foundation including the Chief Russell Brooks Memorial Fund; DiMeo Family Fund; Griffis Institute Fund, Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, Inc. Endowment Fund; Rome, NY Emergency Response Fund; The Ride for Missing Children — Mohawk Valley Fund; Utica Royalties, Inc. Fund; and WCNY Mohawk Valley Sustainability Fund.
Founded in 1952, the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties says it has invested $134 million in social-impact initiatives, collaborative leadership, and grantmaking.
