SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Destiny USA was closed to the public for most of the day on Friday, Dec. 27 as the Syracuse Police, New York State Police, and other security officials investigated a possible security threat.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Destiny USA is temporarily closed to the public as the Syracuse Police Department and other law enforcement partners investigate a potential threat. The safety and security of visitors, employees, and tenants remain our highest priority,” the Syracuse Police public relations team said in a statement issued just before 10:30 a.m., when the mall’s opening was delayed.
As of about 12:20 p.m., New York State Police cars were seen still blocking mall entrances — and for several hours after that.

Update: At 5:42 p.m., Syracuse Police announced that the mall would reopen after arresting a Syracuse man in connection with the incident. Darrell Anderson Navedo, age 50, was charged with one count of making a terroristic threat. Police say that in the early morning hours of Friday, they were made aware of a threat that was “both specific and actionable. Therefore, with the public’s safety in mind, a decision was made, in conjunction with Destiny USA ownership, to suspend operations at Destiny USA based on information received.”
Police noted that after Navedo was taken into custody, there no longer was an active threat to Destiny USA — thereby allowing the mall to reopen.
