MVHS taps Khan to lead new transitional-year residency program

Afsar Khan

UTICA, N.Y. — The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) has named Afsar Khan, M.D., as program director of the new Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Transitional Year Residency Program.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) recently approved the program for 12 residency positions and the program participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Training begins July 2023.

A transitional-year program provides global training for physician learners before they enter a more specialized residency track and is required for many residency programs. The Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare General Surgery Residency Program is sponsoring the transitional-year program at MVHS, which offers resident experiences in general surgery, emergency medicine, inpatient medicine, ambulatory clinics, intensive-care unit, and elective opportunities across a variety of specialties.

“We are ready for a robust first year for this program that will allow residents to try their hand at several different specialties,” Khan said in a release. “We have a lot to offer with the Wynn Hospital opening this fall. Becoming a teaching hospital is a priority toward recruiting and retaining doctors in our area.”

MVHS has established residencies in family medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, podiatry, dental, and pharmacy along with the new transitional year with a current resident total of 45. The health-care system is also applying for residencies in emergency medicine and obstetrics/gynecology.
