Alfred University appoints former business-school dean as its 14th president

ALFRED, N.Y. — A former dean of the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School will become the next president of a university in New York’s Southern Tier.

The board of trustees of Alfred University has appointed Mark Zupan as the school’s 14th president, effective July 1.

He will succeed Charles Edmondson, who has served as the university’s president since 2000, Alfred University said in a recent news release.

Edmondson had announced his plan to retire last May.

Zupan previously served as the dean of the Simon Business School between 2004 and 2014, according to the release.

He currently is director of the Bradley Policy Center and a professor of economics and public policy at Simon.

Prior to Simon, Zupan was dean and professor of economics at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management for seven years.

Before that, he was on the faculty of the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, attaining tenure there while also serving as associate dean for master’s degree programs.

While earning his Ph.D. in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987, Zupan taught in the economics department at Harvard University, where he earlier earned his bachelor’s degree in 1981.

His fields of specialization include industrial organization, regulation, and political economy.
