Always wanted to buy a North Country prison? Here’s your chance

CHATEAUGAY, N.Y. — The former Chateaugay Correction Facility in Northern New York will be auctioned off on July 24, the New York Office of General Services (OGS) has announced.

Closed since 2014, the 100-acre facility in Franklin County includes 30 buildings built in 1990, according to the listing from OGS. In all, the buildings total 98,000 square feet including administrative buildings, dormitories, a dining hall, a kitchen with walk-in coolers and freezers, garages and buildings for maintenance and storage, as well as buildings for recreational use and vocational training. OGS described the buildings as mostly single story with metal siding and roofing, built on concrete-slab foundations.

The listing notes that the former prison is 10 miles from the provinces of Quebec and Ontario and about an hour and a half from the city of Montreal, “making the region a strategic location for Canadian companies serving the U.S. market.”

The minimum bid has been set at $100,000.

Tours are available several times between now and the auction, OGS said, adding that registration is required and available at Land.Management@ogs.ny.gov.
