Local unemployment rates fell in August, but are still as much as a percent higher than they were a year ago, according to figures released by the state Department of Labor.
Binghamton’s unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in August. That’s down from 9.1 percent in July, but up a full percent from 7.9 percent in August 2011.
In Syracuse, the unemployment rate fell from 8.9 percent in July to 8.6 percent in August, but that’s up from 7.8 percent a year earlier.
The Utica-Rome region’s unemployment rate was 8.2 percent in August, down from 8.6 percent in July, and up from 7.7 percent a year ago.
The state’s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in August, down from 9.1 percent in July, but up from 8.1 percent a year ago.
