Local unemployment rates changed little from a year ago, but are down from the rates the region experienced in March, according to state Labor Department statistics released today.
The Binghamton area’s unemployment rate stayed steady from April 2011 to April 2012 at 8.1 percent, but dropped from 8.6 percent in March.
In Syracuse, the April 2012 unemployment rate was 8.1 percent, up from 7.8 percent a year ago, but down from 8.7 percent last month.
In the Utica-Rome region, the rate was 8.2 percent, up from 8 percent in April 2011, but down from 8.8 percent in March.
Those rates closely mirrored the statewide unemployment rate of 8.1 percent in April, down from 8.7 percent in March, but up from 7.7 percent a year ago.
The nation’s unemployment rate was 7.7 percent in April, down from 8.4 percent in March and 8.7 percent a year ago.
