AT&T brings 4G LTE coverage online in Syracuse

AT&T has activated its 4G LTE wireless data network in Syracuse, the company said today.

The move boosts data speeds for LTE–compatible devices to up to 10 times faster than older 3G networks, according to Dallas–based AT&T (NYSE: T). The 4G LTE network also uses the wireless spectrum more efficiently, the company added.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Syracuse responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices,” AT&T New York President Marissa Shorenstein said in a news release.

AT&T plans to continue bringing 4G LTE coverage online so that its network serves at least 100 markets by the end of 2012. Its announcement about Syracuse coverage comes a day after its Basking Ridge, N.J.–based rival Verizon Wireless reported switching on its own 4G LTE coverage in 11 locations around Syracuse. Verizon Wireless first launched 4G LTE in Syracuse in August of 2011.

AT&T said it has invested over $115 billion into enhancing its wireless and wired networks in the last five years. The company, which reported $126.7 billion in revenue in 2011, has more than 242,000 employees worldwide.
