CLAY, N.Y. — Auburn Community Federal Credit Union (ACFCU) has announced plans to open its first Onondaga County branch at 7538 Oswego Road (Route 57) in the former M&T Bank location.

ACFCU purchased the property — containing a one-story, 3,100-square-foot building on 1.1 acres of land —from M&T Bank for $861,000 on Nov. 24, according to Onondaga County’s online property records.

This will be Auburn Community Federal Credit Union’s fourth branch location overall.

“We wanted to offer existing members the convenience of another branch office, while attracting new members by expanding our services to Onondaga County,” CEO Saverio Scro said in a news release.

Membership in the credit union is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Cayuga, Onondaga, Oswego, and Madison counties.

As the credit union expands, it will be looking to hire people in the communities it serves, he added.

ACFCU’s main office and corporate headquarters are located at 65 Wright Circle in the city of Auburn. The credit union also has branch offices at 101 Prospect St. in Auburn and 2651 Erie Drive in the village of Weedsport.

William P. Evertz of Pyramid Brokerage Company handled the sale for the credit union while Joyce MacKnight of Pyramid represented the sellers.

ACFCU hired P.W. Campbell Contracting Company, Inc. of Pittsburgh to oversee the renovations on its newly acquired property. The credit union anticipates a late spring 2022 opening.

The credit union will announce a date for the public grand opening upon completion of renovations.

Employees of the Auburn State Prison first formed the Auburn Community Federal Credit Union (www.auburnfcu.com) in 1936. Since its early days as the Auburn Prison Employees Federal Credit Union, the credit union has changed its name and grown to serve more than 7,900 people. In December 2001, ACFCU changed its charter to a community charter, allowing anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Cayuga County to join. Another charter change in 2016 expanded membership opportunities to people meeting those same conditions in Onondaga, Oswego, and Madison counties.
