Avelo Airlines adds Florida flights from Binghamton

MAINE, N.Y. — Beginning late this fall, flying south from Binghamton will get a little easier as Avelo Airlines adds nonstop flights to Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida starting Nov. 16.

“Service to Florida is something our community has requested for over 20 years,” Greater Binghamton Airport Commissioner of Aviation Mark Heefner said in a statement. “Our partnership with Avelo not only addresses that need but lays the foundation for successful service for years to come.”

To launch the service, Avelo is offering special introductory one-way fares. The new routes will operate twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and utilize Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

Fort Myers is on Florida’s southwest Gulf Coast, while the Orlando area is home to many theme parks.

“Binghamton, say hello to Avelo,” Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said. “We’re excited to add Binghamton as our first New York destination to Avelo’s U.S. network.”

Currently, Delta is the only airline at the Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM), offering nonstop flights to Detroit. In 2020, the airport received $585,703 in federal funds to extend and rehabilitate the taxiway, the taxiway lighting, and to reconstruct airfield guidance signage. Broome County owns and operates the airport, which is located in the town of Maine, about 10 miles northwest of downtown Binghamton.

“Bringing new passenger air service to BGM has been a goal of my administration from day one,” Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said. “With low fares, convenience, and destinations our residents have wanted for a long time, it’s a great time to fly BGM.”

Avelo now serves 31 destinations including its three bases located at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport, Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport, and Orlando International Airport. The company took flight April 28, 2021, and has since served more than 1 million passengers on over 8,500 nonstop flights.
