ENDICOTT, N.Y. — BAE Systems on Tuesday announced it will provide nearly 500 additional electric-drive propulsion systems for electric-hybrid buses in Quebec.

Association du transport urbain du Quebec (ATUQ), a consortium of public-transit authorities of Quebec, ordered 497 electric-hybrid buses that use the BAE Systems series-E electric drive propulsion system.

The five-year contract includes an option for up to 1,028 additional systems, BAE Systems said.

“This recent order adds to ATUQ’s more than 900 electric hybrids powered by BAE Systems technology,” Bob Lamanna, global accounts manager at BAE Systems, said in a company news release. “The additional system orders validate the success of our product in the transit market and the need for electrified buses in Canada.”

ATUQ is focused on implementing sustainable, green technologies and is using BAE Systems’ series electric-hybrid system as a “step to achieving their goal of fully-electric systems in the future,” the release stated.

This new order of buses will include the anti-idling feature decreasing fuel and emissions at stops, electrically powered heaters for “less maintenance,” and the ability to turn off the diesel engine in specified areas to “create zero-emission driving zones.”

Headquartered in Arlington, Va., BAE Systems, Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems plc, a global defense, security and aerospace company. Its website says the firm employs more than 83,000 globally. That figure includes 1,200 employees in Endicott.

BAE Systems provides support and service products for current and future defense, intelligence, and civilian systems; designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of electronic systems and subsystems for both military and commercial applications; produces specialized security and protection products; and designs, develops, produces, and provides service support of armored combat vehicles, artillery systems, and munitions, according to its website.
