VESTAL — Binghamton University says it has received 29,089 freshman applications for fall 2013 admission, up more than 3 percent from the 28,141 freshman applications it received for fall 2012 admission.

This year’s applications numbers top the university’s previous record high of 28,963 applications set in 2009.

The university’s School of Management received applications from 4,226 prospective freshman students, up 15 percent from a year ago.

Binghamton University says applicant interest in graduate study at the university has also surged with a record 3,402 applications for fall 2013 admission, an increase of nearly 67 percent over last year.

“We’ve never received so many applications for fall admission in our history,” Susan Strehle, interim dean of the Binghamton University Graduate School, said in a news release. “As we look to increase the number of graduate students at Binghamton, this record is a positive one.”

To facilitate the growth in students, the university expects to boost the number of faculty members by nearly 60 for fall 2013, Donald Nieman, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said in the news release.
