VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton University’s Stephen David Ross University and Community Projects Fund has awarded $24,000 in three grants to support initiatives involving collaborations between local nonprofits and university partners.
The Center for Civic Engagement at Binghamton University administers the fund, the school said.
Ross, a distinguished professor emeritus at Binghamton University, established the fund to advance working partnerships between the university and the community.
Ross Fund grants are awarded based on priorities that include promotion of collaboration and cooperation between university and community groups, innovative use of the talents and resources of project partners, demonstrated commitment to the use of existing funds or to obtaining matching funds, and making a “significant, enduring and positive difference in the quality of life of the community.”
Grant awards
The university awarded grants to three projects. Kali’s Klubhouse and the Division of Speech and Language Pathology will use a $5,000 award for a therapeutic horse-riding program that supports children and families in developing speech, language, and social-communication skills.
In addition, Helping Celebrate Abilities, Whitney Point School District, and the Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership will use $7,250 for a program to make free early coding materials available to teachers, children, and families.
The school awarded the American Civic Association and the Human Rights Institute a grant of $11,750 for an internship program for Binghamton University students to learn about the immigration system and provide direct legal services to immigrants.
