Binghamton Zoo announces Peeler as new executive director

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park on Monday announced Jacqueline Peeler as its new executive director.

She started in the position on Jan. 16, taking over for interim director Steven Contento.

This marks a homecoming for Peeler. She graduated from Whitney Point High School and attended both Broome Community College and SUNY Binghamton. She started her career at the Binghamton Zoo in 1984 as a volunteer, and in 1986 started as a visitor services associate and seasonal zookeeper.

Peeler climbed the ranks to become a full-time zookeeper, then interim vet technician, and finally a senior zookeeper, according to a Binghamton Zoo news release.

She moved on to the North Carolina Zoo and the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Illinois as a zookeeper. In 1999, Peeler was named assistant director and general curator at the Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield, Illinois and accepted the position of director in 2014.

The Binghamton Zoo is located at 60 Morgan Road in Binghamton. It was founded in 1875 and is the fifth oldest zoo in the country.
