BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has announced the arrival of Avanti, a two-year-old female Amur leopard.
Avanti arrived on Saturday, Sept. 15, to her new home in the Great Cats of Asia area in the Binghamton Zoo, according to a zoo news release.
Avanti was born on July 26, 2016, at the Potawatomi Zoo located in South Bend, Indiana. This move was recommended by the Amur Leopard Species Survival Plan.
Amur leopards are native to the Amur River Valley along the China-Russian border and the Ussuri River Valley along the China-North Korean border. Panthera Pardus orientalis is considered critically endangered, with only 84 left in the wild, and 200 left in captivity, the release stated.
