Broome County business owner arrested for grand larceny of $21,000

James R. Underhill

CONKLIN, N.Y. — New York State Police in Deposit have arrested a man for allegedly pocketing more than $21,000 that was supposed to be used to pay for vehicle repairs at his repair-shop business in Conklin.

The NYS Police on Thursday announced that James R. Underhill, age 39 of Conklin, was charged Tuesday with the felony of grand larceny in the third degree.

Troopers say they began their investigation on Feb. 28, when a complainant told investigators that Underhill cashed two checks totaling more than $21,000 that were meant to be used to repair a vehicle that had been involved in an accident. The complainant told troopers that the accident occurred almost a year ago and that the truck was still at Underhill’s repair shop and hadn’t been worked on.

After his arrest, Underhill was transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing and was remanded to the Broome County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond.
