BINGHAMTON — Binghamton University (BU) has installed a new solar-powered, pay-by-space meter parking system in front of the Couper Administration Building.

Fitted with highly efficient solar panels and a rechargeable battery, the new system is environmentally friendly and uses a source of free energy, according to the university. The new system, which serves 68 spaces, was quick and easy to install and requires less overall maintenance, BU stated in a news release.

Manufactured by Metric, the multispace system differs from roadside parking meters in that one machine can service up to 1,000 spaces. Daniel Chambers, deputy chief of University Police, says he expects the system to be user-friendly.

“Each space in the lot has been allocated a number, which a customer keys in on the keypad located on the multispace meter,” Chambers said in the release. “After paying for the time they need, customers print a receipt to verify payment and go about their business. There’s no need to put the receipt on the dashboard of the car — the system is able to identify who has paid and who has not.”
