Café Kubal picked to replace Tim Hortons at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Advocates for Upstate Medical University has selected Café Kubal to fill the space that Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shop vacated at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The new space will represent the fifth location for the Syracuse–based coffee roaster, Upstate Medical said in a news release.

The space is located on the 11th floor of the East Tower and the children’s hospital.

The nonprofit Advocates for Upstate Medical University led the selection process for a new children’s hospital concession. The organization holds contracts in the hospital that include café concessions and gift-shop sales.

“We are thrilled to partner with Café Kubal, a Syracuse original, and look forward to a great relationship that will delight staff, patients, families and visitors,” Theresa Devennie, president of the Advocates, said in the release.

Hospital officials say they anticipate that Café Kubal will open the location in May.

A portion of sales at the hospital’s Café Kubal will help the Advocates support direct-service projects to “improve and enhance” patient-care services, support medical education, and enhance community health, the release stated.

Since 2000, the Advocates has provided more than $2 million in support of those activities through events and arrangements with contracts.

Café Kubal owner and Syracuse native Matt Godard said he “couldn’t think of a better location” for the coffee roaster’s fifth store, according to the release.

Before Café Kubal opens, Godard said crews will renovate the existing site to incorporate “some of the colors and perhaps design features” of the children’s hospital. The work will also include changes to the nearby seating area.

Godard said he plans to hire up to 15 employees to staff the children’s hospital location.

In addition to coffee, Godard said the hospital’s Café Kubal store will offer healthy food choices and a kids’ menu.

The children’s hospital location also will serve Gannon’s Ice Cream, Godard added.
