Centro to begin service to Syracuse airport in September

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Centro plans to begin a trial service to Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) on Sept. 5 with 13 daily round trips each weekday from the Syracuse transit hub.

The service will be part of a redesigned SY84 Mattydale bus route which operates from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. weekdays, Centro said in its Tuesday announcement. The first trip will arrive at the airport at 5:32 a.m. and the last will leave the airport around 7 p.m.

“There has been tremendous growth at the airport in recent years and we believe there is an increased need, especially among airport employees for consistent public transportation to and from the airport,” Brian Schultz, CEO of Centro, said in a news release. “Service to the airport has been the most common request we’ve received over the years. Most recently, Syracuse Regional Airport Authority leadership has reached out for solutions to meet their growing demand for their employees. We were able to respond by altering an existing bus route without adding additional resources to our system.”

The Syracuse airport has more than 2,500 employees. Buses will now operate along Route 11 between North Salina Street in Syracuse to Lawrence Road in North Syracuse, discontinuing deviations into neighborhoods where ridership has not recovered since the pandemic, Centro said.

“We’re incredibly excited travelers and airport employees will soon have a convenient and affordable means of transportation to our airport thanks to this new Centro bus service,” Jason Terreri, executive director of the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority, said in the release. “As a major economic engine for Central New York and beyond, increased connectivity to the airport via public transportation is a key component to enhancing the prosperity of the region we serve.”

The new airport service will pick up and drop off passengers near the Arrivals A area, which is adjacent to the baggage claim at terminal A.

Limited bus service to SYR will also be available on Saturdays, Centro noted. Its standard fares will still apply — including $1 for adults and 50 cents for seniors, children 6-9, and individuals with a disability.

The new schedule is available on Centro’s website at www.centro.org. The trial bus service will be evaluated as a potential permanent service change in the spring of 2024
