Chemung Canal set to reopen Owego branches

OWEGO — Chemung Canal Trust Co. will reopen its branch at 203 Main St. in Owego Tuesday and its branch on Route 17C on Feb. 27 after cleanup from the September flooding.

“Like many other Tioga County businesses and homes, our two Owego branches were heavily damaged by the September 2011 floods,” Louis C. DiFabio, executive vice president and division manager of Chemung’s retail banking operations, said in a release. “We are very grateful for the patience of our clients during the time it has taken to get both offices back up and running.”

While both offices were closed and undergoing cleanup efforts, Chemung opened a temporary facility in the parking lot in front of its Route 17C office.

“The temporary office provided our staff the opportunity to continue to meet the banking needs of our clients, as well as assist new customers — many of whom suffered from the flood and were looking for lending programs designed to help them rebuild their homes and businesses,” DiFabio said.

Chemung eliminated ATM fees, and provided extra counseling for borrowers struggling to make loan payments in the days and weeks following the flooding. The bank will remove the temporary facility shortly after the Route 17C branch reopens.

As part of the reopening, the bank adjusted branch hours, installed new ATM machines, is offering new deposit products that eliminate ATM fees, and continues to offer special lending programs for those affected by the flood.

Chemung Canal has 20 branches in Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties in New York and three branches in Bradford County, Pa. Chemung also operates five branches in the Albany area under the Capital Bank name.
